Join in the fun at Luminous Field, the unprecedented site-specific video and sound installation by the Chicago-based artists, Luftwerk, that will illuminate Cloud Gate in Chicago’s Millennium Park from February 10-20.

Family activities, live performances and dance events will complement the installation that will transform the Park into a digital canvas of light and geometrical form, with music composed by Owen Clayton Condon of Chicago’s Third Coast Percussion.

Found in Town is a community-based lost and found program that creates an easy way to facilitate returning lost items to their owners. FiT operates through a network of local bars and nightclubs committed to helping out the members of their community.

How does it work?
Users can register here for free to receive FiT tags for their personal belongings. All tags will bear a unique serial number, or FiT code, and will instruct the finder to visit found-in-town.com in the event that it's found, where and when an anonymous message can be sent to its owner.

Found In Town (FiT) is a new company based in Chicago that recently launched its free online service that facilitates reuniting owners with their lost or misplaced items. “120,000 cell phones are lost annually in Chicago taxi cabs alone. Imagine how many keys, wallets and jackets are lost,” said Zach Haller, of Lakeview, CEO and founder of Found in Town. “Everyone loses things. People want to return lost items, but they often don’t know how. We make it easy and hassle-free to be a good Samaritan.”

Zach, a Minneapolis native has stated the business is slowing growing. Less than 1000 participants signed up and he has solicited four Boystown bars to advertise on the key-chain tags. But the brand recognition necessary to make the service extremely helpful isn’t there yet. “I think people may see the sticker and think, Found in Town? I don’t get it.” - soon though, it will catch on!

Celebrate Chinese LUNAR New Year - Uptown Jan 28

"The Lunar New Year Parade in Uptown will be sponsored this year by the Hip Sing Association and will be held on Saturday, January 28th at 1:00pm. The parade will begin at 1121 West Argyle Street (the Hip Sing Assoc. Office location) and will proceed east to Sheridan Road then go south on Sheridan to Ainslie and then west to Broadway, south on Broadway to Sun Wah Plaza and then back north to Argyle.

There will be parking restrictions on Argyle starting at 9:00 a.m. and full street closure from 12:00 noon until approximately 4:00 p.m. The parade will feature lion and dragon dances, floats and the Senn High School Marching Band. Following the parade, the 'Lion Team' will visit area Asian restaurants and other businesses and will light firecrackers at each location to scare away the evil spirits (firecrackers) and to bring in good fortune.

Enjoy the Tet Festival on Saturday, January 28th. The Vietnamese Association of Illinois will host this Lunar New Year Festival from 11am to 5pm at St. Augustine College located at 1333-45 West Argyle Street. Admission is free. The festival will feature cultural performances, dragon dances, games, food booths and martial arts performances."

The U.S. Department of Agriculture is revoking the white tiger owner's exhibition license for health and safety violations, including allegedly posing a danger to children.

The tiger show which began Jan. 13 was scheduled to run through Feb. 12. Navy Pier officials said they paid $27,000 to the company and had sold $16,500 in tickets so far.

The Chicago Tribune reports, "According to court documents, the USDA found that Marcus Cook's company ZooCats Inc. "willfully violated" the Animal Welfare Act. The USDA has been hunting Cook for years now, alleging a long history of infractions.

"There is evidence that ZooCats trainers did not handle the animals properly, at times, using physical abuse with a cattle prod to train, work or control an animal during an exhibition," USDA spokesman Dave Sacks told us.

Cook denied the USDA's claims. He blamed USDA bureaucrats, particularly a higher-up, Sarah L. Conant. Cook claimed she's an animal rights activist with a political agenda aimed at eliminating all traveling zoos, exhibitors and other such entertainments from the American landscape.

Rahm Emanuel's Surplus Auctions Raise $3.6 MIllion

Mayor Rahm Emanuel announced today that the Department of Procurement Services (DPS) collected $3.6 million in 2011 from selling City surplus materials through its online auction system, nearly twice the amount collected in 2010. The online auctions allow the City to sell unneeded surplus possessions including fax machine toner, scrap metal, old vehicles parts, and street sweepers.

"It is our responsibility to the taxpayers of Chicago to leave no stone unturned or old fax machine unsold when it comes to bringing in new revenue to the City," said Mayor Emanuel. "For each dollar we bring in through our online auction system, it's one less dollar we have to find from someplace else which allows us to preserve critical City services that Chicagoans depend on. I commend the Department of Procurement Services for its aggressive pursuit of items that can be sold online. It is an example of the type efficient, ingenuity that we will continue to strive for every day."

Through increased coordination and outreach between City departments, DPS doubled the amount it collected in 2010 from $1.8 million to $3.6 million. In addition, DPS has projected that it will increase that amount in 2012 for a total of $4.6 million in revenue. Already in the first month of 2012, DPS auctions have generated over $90,000in new revenue.

Recently successful auctions include 450 tons of scrap metal, several pieces of heavy equipment and a set of decommissioned Micro-Turbine power generators. Most auction items are sold at the City's salvage yard, though some equipment is auctioned onsite at the City facilities where they were used. DPS also works internally with City departments and Sister Agencies to identify any items that still may have potential use to the City. DPS has sold surplus items to buyers all over the United States as well as South America, Mexico, and Canada.

Piano Man Philip Fortenberry in Naperville Jan 22

A true Southern gentleman, pianist Philip Fortenberry will tickle the ivories whilst telling a story or two when he comes to Naperville.

Fortenberry will perform a cabaret-style show called “Give My Regards” Jan. 22 at North Central College. The show begins at 6 p.m. in the College’s Madden Theatre.

During the show, he will perform popular songs spanning all genres and styles, interspersing them with his own recollections of the many composers, directors and performers who continue to inspire him.

He has accompanied such legendary Broadway icons as Eartha Kitt, Betty Buckley, Donna McKechnie and Laurie Beechman in concerts in New York and across the nation, and currently serves as the associate conductor of “Jersey Boys” at the Palazzo Theater in Las Vegas.

“’Give My Regards’ is a show I’ve put together. I’ve had a career of playing for great shows; great music of all sorts of genres from rock music to Broadway, and I’ve worked with a lot of amazing artists — singers, choreographers, conductors and composers,” he said. “This show essentially pays homage to that music from my perspective. I tell stories about the music that I play from my perspective as a pianist. I offer a setting, you might say.”

His show is almost entirely him and the piano.

“I will usually do this number that Katharine Hepburn actually recorded, and who knew she could sing? I figured if she could do it, so could I,” he said with a laugh. “That’s the only reason I would ever sing. I talk, I tell the stories, and I play the songs, essentially.”

Some songs you will hear include medleys from “Mamma Mia” and “Saturday Night Fever;” plus songs from musicals like “Cats” and “Jesus Christ Superstar.” You’ll even hear some ragtime and Liberace’s “Chopsticks.”

“It’s a variety of things,” he said. “It’s such a broad concept. It covers people and experiences in my life.”

Fortenberry has gone from being a four-year-old child plunking around on a toy piano in Southern Mississippi to playing at the Palazzo Theater in Las Vegas. It has been a remarkable journey, he said, and it’s that journey he shares with the audience.

“’Give My Regards’ — there are a lot of people who came across my path and a lot of experiences I’ve had that are going to bring me to Naperville, Illinois,” he said. “Never in my life did I dream that is where I would find myself. It will be an honor to be there.”

Best Plumbers in Chicago That We have Found

A few months ago we needed a plumber ~ UGH, big sigh, we hate having to find contractors for anything... the drama, the unknown expense and the crazy service charges and fees when you don't know the lingo and whether or not you're simply being ripped off. It's hard to find good honest mechanics and contractors.

We needed and wanted a new kitchen sink installed to replace a really old one we hated and timely enough, our aging toilet was acting up and we decided to replace it as well and we were going to be "green" and get a dual-flush, environmentally-friendly low water usage toilet as a replacement.

We were flooded with memories... unfortunately, BAD MEMORIES of plumbers past! About 10 years ago, we had to hire a plumber to replace a hot water tank in our home. The guy had given us "an estimate" that seemed reasonable compared to 2 other plumbing contractors, but afterward, the job then allegedly "took longer" than he thought, so the final bill was $250 more than the original estimate.

Plus he was messy and we are sort of clean freaks! I had to do some major clean up after he left. Neat and tidy are not two words that are often associated with plumbers, or any contractor for that matter. In fact, many drive trucks up on your driveway leaking oil, leave supply packaging lying around your house, and drag who knows what into your home on their shoes!

Fast forward back to present. Late last summer we had met the Michael J. Goode,the owner from Goode Plumbing at a Business Expo in Chicago. Thank goodness we had tossed Mike's business card in one of our business card piles and easily found it!

We remembered Mike and his colleague, Jeff looked real professional in their uniforms (dark blue oxfords with company logo and khaki pants), were extremely friendly and seemed very knowledgeable in the few minutes we had chatted. Chicago Lake Shore Medical Associates Offers Healthy Holiday Eating Tips

Nearly two out of every three Americans is overweight or obese.

Dr. Julie Roth, an Internal Medicine and Nutrition specialist at Chicago Lake Shore Medical Associates (CLSMA), the largest private medical practice on Northwestern University’s medical campus in downtown Chicago, offers ten tips to avoid weight gain over the holiday season the healthy way:

1) Keep a food log or diary. Studies show that people who log their foods lose twice as much weight.

2) Be realistic. A goal of 0.5-2 pounds weight loss/week is realistic. Weight loss happens over time.

3) Think of food as fuel. When choosing foods choose healthier options because it will help from a calorie and an overall health standpoint. Healthier choices will also help avoid sugar highs/lows which may impact concentration.

4) Drink lots of water. Thirst is often confused with hunger with hunger and extra calories are often consumed when water would suffice.

5) Get enough sleep. Fatigue can be confused with hunger. Sleep is essential to improve a variety of other health issues as well. Holidays are definitely a time when the candle gets burned at both ends.

6) Address stress levels. Emotional eating leads to the consumption of excess calories. When cravings/emotions hit try spending 20-30 minutes focusing on a non-food item until the craving/emotion passes.

7) Plan ahead for success. Healthy choices and weight loss don't "just happen.” Plan meals three days in advance. "Know before you go" regarding options when dining out. Look at menus in advance and make a plan.

8) Practice moderation. Try to limit indulgences try to where enjoyment still exists but guilt doesn't. In other words, the first few bits are an indulgence with little guilt. After that, the guilt (and calories) pile up and enjoyment doesn't.

9) Be seasonal when choosing. If struggling with choices at a party or in a buffet line, first take a “lay of the land.” Next, choose things which are seasonal and only available now. You can be sure to find a chocolate chip cookie next time.

10) Log your festivities. Keep track of holiday parties on a calendar. You’ll soon realize that Thanksgiving to New Year’s Day isn’t all one big party – only certain days. Also, keep track of your eating on your food logs; it will help keep you on track.

Over 700 people came out to hear Whoopi Goldberg speak this week at the Palmer House Hilton, and over $325,000 was raised for Chicago House. It was the 3rd installment of their Annual Chicago House Speakers Series.

Whoopi Goldberg, award-winning actor, producer and television host, is an outspoken human rights activist who is also well known for co-founding and hosting Comic Relief in the United States to raise funds for the homeless. She donates her time and talents to DIFFA and Broadway Cares.

She is a vigorous advocate for children, human rights, education, substance abuse, and in the fight against HIV/AIDS.

After doing 2 appearances on Thursday in other states, she took her red-eye bus across country to get to Chicago at 5am on Friday. - She does not like to fly!

Whoopi told how in 1983, she was first touched by HIV and the spread of AIDS. "I was in San Francisco and gay people were dying. Early on Liz Taylor came to me and asked my help to start fundraising. Our government didn't care. And Ronald Reagan basically gave us the finger. I think when Rock Hudson died, people started to care."

"Young people just don't get it." she said. "Young people are dumb. Parents are not having the proper discussions with their children. You know, Gaga speaks, and the kids listen. Young people listen to young people. It's going to take spreading the message in new ways. You know Disney has the power to reach a lot of young people. And the message doesn't have to be at about sex. But about taking better care of yourselves."

She also says, "I have great idea's for commercials - but television would never run them. You know, I would say, Don't Put That In There! Kids are not talking about the issue. And I think we need to ask - HAVE YOU EVEN BEEN CHECKED YET?"

"In 1985, a courageous group of community volunteers formed Chicago House, the first organization in the Midwest to provide housing for people with HIV and AIDS. In those early years of the epidemic, we rallied to support friends who had lost everything — their homes, jobs, even the support of their families. We volunteered our time and energy to restore dignity to the lives of these friends in their final days." Tells Rev. Stan Sloan, CEO at Chicago House.

"That spirit continues to drive our organization, from our board of trustees to our associate board to every volunteer and donor. Together, we continuously evolve Chicago House to meet the changing nature of the disease, and the needs of those who suffer from it.

Today, HIV and AIDS increasingly impacts people who are dealing with homelessness, mental illness, substance abuse, and extreme poverty. Even before being diagnosed, many of these families and individuals have never had homes, never had jobs, never had a support network of friends or family. Medical advances give them a chance to live longer, healthier lives, and to improve those lives, but the process is not easy. Nothing about AIDS is easy."

I think we often forget how it easy it is to help. Whoopi made a comment about helping. And sharing. "A lot of folks think HIV is not an issue. But it IS. And it's not going away. If people had paid attention 25 years ago, do you realize where we could be today? People don't pay attention. They are more concerned with what the Kardashians are doing and wearing! Chicago House is so great. And I tip my hat to them. They are doing something. They are getting things done. They are helping and making a difference. But the work is not done. It is not complete. I try to help who ever I can. My mother taught me, if I have a crust of bread, and I have enough to share. Share it. Give some to someone who needs some. Help. In any way you can. Maybe you can't donate $1000. But everyone has something to give and share."

Restoring Earth at Abbott Hall of Conservation at Field Museum

Not since Indiana Jones has the scientist’s role as action hero come to life as vividly as in The Field Museum’s new exhibition that immerses visitors in adventures with Museum scientists as they promote conservation from Chicago to South America, to Pacific coral reefs and points in between.

Opening to the public November 4, 2011, Abbott Hall of Conservation Restoring Earth is The Field’s newest permanent exhibition. It uses large-scale photographs, videos, and fun, hands-on learning tools to focus on active science and those who make it happen.

“We want to change the perception of what a museum can be,” says Anna Huntley, the exhibition’s project manager. “Field Museum scientists work to preserve biodiversity all over the world. We want people to know that conservation can be discovery, beauty, adventure, and action.”

Restoring Earth is a testament to The Field Museum’s emphasis on conservation and sustainability, but the exhibition doesn’t lecture, telling visitors what’s right and wrong. Instead, visitors hear scientists’ own words – describing the work they do and the passion and urgency that drives them.

The exhibition is also a treat for the senses. Huge, breathtaking visuals produced in vivid color and high resolution show portions of beetles, fish scales, and butterfly wings that illustrate the stunning beauty in the natural world all around us. Throughout the exhibition, visitors have the opportunity to select and view digital video shorts that explore concepts and processes used by Field Museum scientists. Music, animation, and humor are used to engage both kids and adults as they learn about subjects ranging from why coral reefs matter to how ancient peoples practiced conservation.

Rahm Emanuels Plan to Make More Money off us in 2012

Are children really in
danger of fast drivers in Chicago?

Rahm thinks so.

He wants cameras placed in 50% of the city, "to protect the children". And fine fast drivers a $100 a pop. Hmmmm....let's see, 50 speeders a day = $5000 x 30 days = $150,000 a month. $2 million a year. And that's a conservative number.

Are that many children be ran over? - And you thought the new parking meters were outrageous?!

Next up -

Taxi's of course.

The fare hike is once again being brought to the table. $1 a ride fare hike could means MILLIONS for the city.

And what about the pooch?

They say only 5% of dog owners in Chicago currently buy a license for their dog. ($5 for fixed - $50 for unfixed!). But under a mandatory license law, owners without the license will be fined $25-$200. (I don't know why the big range...)

What else could be in store for us?

Raising the fee for city vehicle stickers is being whispered about. ALSO multiple city stickers on your car's windshield? Start scraping! Apparently you must scrape off last year's sticker or face a $120 fine.

Ald. Tunney told Sun-Times, he is pushing to have all Ward Superintendents write warnings and tickets for unshoveled sidewalks.

I don't know if you have noticed, but on some streets there has been a HUGE INCREASE in the number of designated "Handicapped" spots in neighborhoods. On my street in Uptown, 5 new designated "Handicapped" spots have appeared within 2 blocks. Making it harder and harder for the average person to park. On top of that, stores are blocking off more and more designated handicapped spots. I am sorry, but I have seen people get in and out of their cars, and they don't look handicapped. Maybe fat yes. But not handicapped.

At any rate, normal everyday drivers are not allowed to park in those "reserved" spots. I get it. But now a new ordinance will allow police to actually impound cars and enforce fines up to $1000! For those caught abusing the placards and spots.

I want to see STRICTER rules about handing out the handicap stickers in the first place! GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR.

I said it.
I turned 40, so what?!

Isn't 40 the new 30?!

Don't we all want to age gracefully?. Admit it. You know who you are. Some of us are obsessed with body image, good looks and a youthful appearance. Luckily my mother always preached Moisturize, Moisturize, Moisturize! And I did. Plus I worked in Skin Care for Neiman Marcus for 2 years, so I know there are many products out there that can in fact slow down the hands of time.

The attitude that skin care is a feminine pursuit has changed. More and more men are becoming concerned with good grooming and health on appearance.

I have one word for you....PREVENTION. I am not a novice when it comes to facials and skincare. I've been diligent in taking care of myself for more than 10 years. I am glad when people comment on how clear, luminous and smooth my complexion is. When it comes to skincare, I don't go for a bargain. I go for quality. I learned that in this country, bargain and quality almost never coincide. So, for me, when I pay for quality, I am making an investment that is going to translate into great value later on.

When I go for a facial, I look for precision in removing all of the junk out of my face in a manner that is clean and gentle. What matters is that my skin remains clear of blemishes, luminous, well hydrated and firm. When I leave my facial, I want to be able to go about my business without being red from inflammation.
